What is the Islamic view on cursing the wives, family, and companions of the Holy Prophet?
The wives, family and companions of the Holy Prophet are respected personalities in Islam and it is clear that Holy Prophet loved them dearly. However, historically they did have disagreements on pivotal issues including the succession of the Prophet. Arguments regarding these historical disputes are leading to rising sectarian tensions and violence. It is imperative for Muslims to adhere to the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and maintain the highest standards when debating with one another. Whilst there may always be disagreement regarding historical events, using abusive language and cursing the wives, family, and companions of the Holy Prophet is contrary to the teaching of the Holy Qur’an, “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.” (16:125)
Nonetheless, it is also necessary to create a space for scholarly discussions regarding sensitive topics that are carried out in an intellectual and respectful manner. These discussions can then be used to educate Muslims whilst maintaining unity in accordance with the Qur’anic injunction, “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (31:103)
